Black Soldier Flies

Black Soldier Fly Larvae

We also cultivate black soldier flies. Why? Because their larvae decompose food waste even more efficiently than red wigglers and provide an excellent feed for our chickens, enhancing our circular zero-waste system. Packed with protein and nutrients, black soldier fly larvae are an outstanding food source for chickens, lizards, and fish. We offer them both live and freeze-dried, sold by the pound, as pet food.

Black Soldier Fly Larvae Frass

Similar to worms, flies also contribute to soil health as they consume food waste and produce castings, known as "frass." As the larvae break down the food, they release bound nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium from the decaying material, which becomes concentrated in their frass. This makes frass a valuable and rich organic soil amendment.

HOW WE FEED THESE DECOMPOSERS

Taylor farms and Wren House Brewing kindly provide the food used in our Black Soldier Fly Breeding program. Support their sustainability efforts by grabbing a locally brewed craft beer or purchasing a salad or vegetable kit.
